India’s Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) framework is a critical environmental law designed to protect fragile coastal ecosystems while allowing sustainable economic development. Introduced in 1991 and revised multiple times, most notably in 2011 and 2018, CRZ rules classify India’s coastline into four zones (CRZ I–IV) based on ecological sensitivity and human activity.
In this video, we explain:
What CRZ is and why it was introduced
Classification of coastal areas into CRZ I, II, III, and IV
No Development Zone (NDZ) concept and its evolution
Changes in CRZ rules from 1991 to 2018
Protection of mangroves, coral reefs, and coastal biodiversity
Role of enforcement agencies and wildlife crime control
How CRZ laws balance livelihoods, tourism, and conservation
This lecture is highly relevant for UPSC, State PCS, Environment & Ecology, Geography Optional, and Current Affairs.
📌 Understanding CRZ is essential to understanding India’s coastal future—where law, environment, and development intersect.
