This mini-documentary was directed and reported by Nadine White in March 2020 while she was a news reporter at HuffPost UK.
The film examines the Black People’s Day of Action of 2 March 1981, organised in response to the New Cross Fire, which claimed the lives of 13 young Black people and later a 14th victim. The march brought Britain to a standstill and marked a turning point in Black British political mobilisation.
Centring the voices of survivors, families and organisers, the documentary explores the enduring impact of the tragedy, the absence of justice, and the wider legacy of the march within British history.
This was the first newsroom-commissioned mini-documentary of its kind produced by a UK news organisation to focus specifically on the Black People’s Day of Action.
The original HuffPost UK hosting page was later removed following the BuzzFeed merger and the closure of the UK news and video operation.
This film is shared here by Brixton Heights for archival and portfolio purposes, to preserve public-interest journalism and an important moment in Black British history.
Originally commissioned by HuffPost UK (2020).
