This video is based on extensive reason I did a few years ago for my undergraduate dissertation on Commonwealth Migration to Britain between 1948 and 1962. It contains some specific information on local history, but I hope it will also help students that studying the AQA Topic of Migration, Empire and People. For example, this video does focus on the factor of ‘Role of Government’ (think 16 mark question), as I began my research with the 1948 Nationality Act and ended with the Immigration Control Act of 1962. Students may also be able to draw some information out for the ‘Compare Question’, should they get a question asking them to compare the Windrush generation to another group to settle in Britain.
As you will see, I am indebted to British Pathé News for many of my visuals. There were also visits made to the National Archives, the London Metropolitan Archives, and the British Newspaper Library. Also special thanks goes to the Moving Here Website that enabled me to access some really good material online.
