Indianapolis teen accused of killing his barber makes first court appearance

Описание: IMPD arrested a 16-year-old boy on an active murder warrant in their investigation into a November fatal shooting on Indianapolis' north side.

The shooting was reported shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 in the 3800 block of North Pennsylvania Street, near 38th and Meridian streets.

Responding officers found 35-year-old Stephen Jarone Coach Jr., who was taken to IU Methodist Hospital in critical condition after being shot. Coach was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The night of the shooting, IMPD Capt. Don Weilhammer told 13News that police believed the incident began as a disturbance in the street. Two persons of interest were detained and later released pending further investigation after consultation with the prosecutor's office.

"Detectives canvassed the area for video footage, witnesses, and potential forensic evidence," the department said in a release Jan. 29. "After following up on several leads, they successfully identified the 16-year-old as the suspect in this case."

On Tuesday, Jan. 27, after "several weeks of trying to locate the suspect," detectives and the SWAT team located him near 42nd Street and North Mitthoefer Road on Indy's far east side and took him into custody without incident, police said.

The Marion County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Dominique Sherman Jr. with two counts of murder, one count of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and one count of dangerous possession of a firearm by a child.

During Sherman's initial court hearing Friday, Jan. 30, a judge ordered him to be held without bond. His jury trial is scheduled to start March 23.

Coach was a father of four, and his longtime partner was at the suspect's initial court hearing, bringing Coach's 1-month-old daughter, whom Coach never got to meet.
