Kelp forests are important near-shore habitat that play a key role in the developmental journey of Salmon by providing shelter, food and protection as they grow and develop… but unfortunately, many of these areas have been degraded over the past century due to a host of factors.
As part of our collective efforts to monitor and establish a baseline for restoration work, we work closely with various partners in our community including youth from the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Nation, whom we train to help monitor these kelp beds each summer. Using drones, we create orthomosaic maps (which is a fancy way of saying a ‘birds-eye-view collage’) of these areas so that we can see if their range is expanding or shrinking over time relative to various environmental factors that we monitor, such as water temperature, ocean salinity and dissolved oxygen levels.
Getting an understanding of these near-shore habitats that surround our estuaries and coastlines is one of the first steps in working to restore these ecosystems for the benefit of not only Salmon, but all the species that live here and depend on them, to create a healthier future for us all.
