To most railfans, the Nathan (old cast) P3 is synonymous with Southern Pacific. However, SP was not the only railroad to use the P3. In the Pacific Northwest, the P3 was most often heard on Northern Pacific. NP horns had a different bell reversal than SP horns did, and this horn is arranged with a NP bell reversal.
NP (and later BN) had a line over Lookout Pass, on the Montana/Idaho border. This line was originally intended to be their transcontinental main line, but competition from the UP forced the NP to build another line north and the Lookout Pass line became a branch line serving the rich mines near Wallace Idaho. The line over Lookout Pass was abandoned in 1982.
