Thanks for checking out my video. First of I just want to say that both products are very well built and are great products. I simply wanted to show everyone a side by side comparison of the Steddiepod and Glidecam so you can decide for yourself what product might be better for achieving smooth flying shots.
Disclaimer:
I am a novice student videographer and have no prior experience using these products so what you are watching is the very first time I used the products.
In this video I used a Canon 5d Mark ii with a 24-70L.
Camera settings:
AV mode @ F22 and a focal length of 24mm.
Product models used:
Glidecam 2000 HD
Steddiepod
Cost:
Steddiepod ~ around $500
Glidecam ~ around $450
Review:
Steddiepod claims to be a hand held camera stabilizer, a monopod, a tripod, a camera stand, a body camera mount/ ego cam, a Kitty / Doggy / Monkey cam and a camera boom where as the Glidecam is just a stabilizer or maybe they could claim a to be camera holder also. They are both very well built and sturdy products but I have to say for ultra smooth gliding shots the steddiepod just doesn't cut it. I spoke with the creator of the Steddiepod who states it was more than likely user error for the bounce in the video clips but as you can see in the video the bounce is predominantly on the left side when walking or running. After reviewing the video I realized the the Steddiepod is equipped with a fluid head that allows a dutch tilt. What's a dutch tilt? It allows the camera to move from the horizontal position to vertical position. The fluid head could have been defective on mine as there was small amount of play / wiggle when the camera was in its horizontal position and tightened all the way down. I did share a iPhone clip of this movement with the owner who replied "that the movement / play is normal."
With all that said in my eyes I prefer the Glidecam over the Steddiepod for those smooth gliding shots. Yes you get more for your money with the Steddiepod because it can be used in so many other ways but to have it fall short in something that was important to me (smooth gliding shots) It rendered it useless. The Glidecam holds its reputation and performs amazingly after it is balanced and to me it's worth the extra cash to purchase a product that performs. There is a learning curve with the Glidecam and Steadiepod so don't think you will be a professional right away. Like all things practice makes perfect but with the Steddiepod if the product has a small issue practicing wont be able to fix it. This review is my opinion so please do your own research when deciding to purchase a product. Please read the small print on all return policies of products to make sure you are clear of any clauses.
Thank you!
