Vitamin and mineral supplementation is usually not needed for breast-fed babies through the first birthday. Breastmilk is complete nutrition for your baby. The one exception to this is vitamin D. This essential nutrient we typically get from the sun. There are very few natural food sources that have vitamin D. Breastmilk is also typically considered a poor source of vitamin D, however, this is typically because many of us are vitamin D deficient. Your pediatrician should have told you that if you were exclusively breast-feeding, you would need to supplement your baby with vitamin D. This video discusses different ways to supplement your baby with vitamin D if they are breastmilk feeding. This is not considered medical advice. This is current evidence based practice. Always discuss supplementation of any herbs, supplements or nutrition with your health care team.
