The Boulton Paul P.92 was a radical approach to British night fighter design. Intended to replace the Defiant , it was built around a massive 13-foot rotating turret carrying four 20-millimeter Hispano cannons, buried deep inside a thick inverted-gull wing. The aerodynamic challenges of this low-slung dome were so severe that a half-scale flying wooden replica, the JA8, had to be commissioned just to test the drag and handling.
The project was canceled in May 1940 as the Air Ministry prioritized the immediate production of aircraft like the Bristol Beaufighter. However, the surviving prototype still underwent extensive flight testing. Had the P.92 reached production with reliable engines, its projected performance and heavy armament would have made it a direct equivalent to the American Northrop P-61 Black Widow, which utilized a remotely operated turret with four fifty caliber machine guns to achieve a similar role.
Note: As is often the case with canceled experimental prototypes, historical sources and flight logs can sometimes have minor discrepancies regarding exact performance numbers.
