A playthrough of Konami's 1992 license-based adventure game for PCs running Dos, Batman Returns.
I get the best ending in this playthrough.
Then, at 57:57, I show the optional Ice Princess cutscene, and at 59:31, the alternate ending that's triggered by watching that scene.
Released in December 1992, Batman Returns for MS-DOS was the first Batman game to be published by Konami. Their NES beat 'em up of the same name ( • Batman Returns (NES) Playthrough ) came out in January 1993, and the SNES version followed a month later.
Batman Returns on PC isn't an action game like you'd have found on the consoles. After learning that the Red Triangle Circle is attacking Gotham Plaza, Batman outfits his utility belt with a selection of high-tech gadgets and nonlethal weapons, hops in the Batmobile, and speeds off to help. Once he's cracked a few heads and interrogated some suspects, he returns to the Batcave to feed what he has learned into his supercomputer and reveals a couple of promising leads. From there, it's up to you to tug at the threads of the mystery and figure out how to proceed. You have nine days to get the job done. Fail, and it's curtains for Gotham.
Batman Returns is a hard game to pin down. It's essentially a graphic adventure, but it lacks the object-oriented puzzles that define the genre. The presentation places it closer to a digital comic, but there's too much gameplay to qualify it as such. Perhaps the best way to frame it would be as a point-and-click detective mystery.
The gameplay is engaging despite being so simple, and the multiple routes through the story make it worth going through a few times. The writing and the comic-style cutscene panels do a good job of selling the story, and the graphics and music nail the atmosphere.
It's a game that's largely driven by its presentation, and to that end, it's a huge success. The hand painted backgrounds are beautifully detailed and animated, and the character art and animation is excellent. For a 1992 release with reasonable system requirements - its seven HD floppies had to be installed to the HDD, and it required a 286/20 with 640K and VGA support - Batman Returns puts on an amazing show.
The PC version of Batman Returns is fun and hyper stylish, and I don't think it gets enough love, so I thought I'd show it some.
Merry Christmas!
