WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (1564-1616)
Born William Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Shakespeare's father, John, was a prominent man in Stratford; he was an alderman and a glove-maker, but his fortunes fluctuated. Mary Arden, his mother, came from an ancient land-owning family. Educated at the King's New School in Stratford. Married Anne Hathaway in 1582; he was a father of three children within three years. The next historical record shows that Shakespeare is an actor and writer London in 1592. Shakespeare was now a successful playwright. In 1599, he became a partner in a group that built theatres and produced his original plays. The group received a royal patent in 1603; Shakespeare was now a wealthy man. In 1593/4 when the theatres were closed because of plague, Shakespeare started to publish his poetry. Shakespeare presented the last of his non-dramatic, 'The Sonnets' in 1609; they are broadly divided between the 'young man' sonnets (1-126) and the 'dark lady' sonnets (127-152), the last two conclude the collection. Died in 1616 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Shakespeare is frequently described one of the most important writers that ever lived.
