The Bronzolo Bypass Tunnel in South Tyrol, northern Italy, is a key infrastructure project designed to divert heavy traffic from the SS12 Brenner corridor and provide long-term relief for the local community.
Driven beneath residential areas and the Aldino River, the 702-meter tunnel passes through highly challenging ground conditions, including permeable alluvial deposits, glacial moraine, gravel, and unstable debris flow material.
Excavation is carried out using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) with sequential advance under a pipe umbrella system. Ground stability is ensured through shotcrete, steel lattice girders, systematic rock bolting, and intensive jet grouting, supported by advanced ground support solutions from Sandvik Ground Support.
In this video, Lukas Mair, Project Manager at STRABAG AG, shares key insights from the project and explains how close collaboration and the right technical approach enabled safe and efficient tunnelling in loose ground.
