Everyone recognizes the yin-yang symbol — but what most people don't realize is that the visible carvings and paintings in Chinese temples are just the surface. Beneath the decoration lies a sophisticated philosophical system that has shaped the design of Chinese buildings for over three thousand years.
In this documentary, I explore five hidden applications of yin-yang philosophy in Chinese architecture — from the number of columns in a temple facade, to why the front and back of the same building can look like two entirely different structures. Filmed on location across Taiwan in Hsinchu, Taipei, and Hualien as part of Northeastern University's Dialogue of Civilizations program on Chinese Art and Architecture (Summer 2025).
Topics covered:
• Numerical Harmony — why temples always use odd-numbered bays
• Spatial Orientation — how cardinal directions shape facade design
• Spatial Organization — balancing open and enclosed spaces
• Hierarchical Expression — using scale, elevation, and color to communicate importance
• Material & Textural Contrasts — the philosophy behind surface treatments
All footage and photography captured during the program.
