Spokane doctor's breakthrough kidney disease treatment shows promising results

Описание: A Spokane doctor at Providence Hospital is now one step closer to a new treatment for kidney disease.

If the trials remain successful, the new discovery could save millions of kidney disease patients.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says more than one in seven adults in the U.S. may have chronic kidney disease.

Dr. Katherine Tuttle says her team's new breakthrough treatment is offering a new set of hope for future patients.

"This is travesty. This has to change," Dr. Tuttle said.

Studying kidneys for decades, Dr. Tuttle says her interest in kidneys started from patients she's seen.

"We spend a lot of time talking to each other. I was stunned when not long afterward, she crashed into dialysis in St. Louis, and didn't live very long," Tuttle said.

Dr. Tuttle knew she had to do something about kidney disease.

"It's an enormous public health problem," she said.

Her team's breakthrough started from a trial in 2022 that included 714 patients.

When an ASI inhibitor combined with an ACE or ARB and SGLT-2 inhibitor, 70% of patients had substantial reduction in kidney damage.

"The treatment effect exceeded our expectations. You pinch yourself, is this real?" Tuttle said.

Now, her team is taking the trial to a global stage. For the next four years, partnering with the University of Oxford, the trial will begin with 11,000 patients across the world.

"I'm just grateful to be here and be a part of it. Realized we can now go to a clinic and say we have hope for you, we couldn't say that for long time," Dr. Tuttle said.

Dr Tuttle says she wants to bring more awareness about chronic kidney disease. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney and heart disease, you should take a test annually before it's too late to treat it.
