When artist David Choe invited Wevr to make a VR film of his band MANGCHI playing at a music festival in Pomona, we were hesitant. We love David and his band, but we aren’t big fans of live VR performances. The cameras never seem to be in the ideal position, which is directly in the middle of the action. David said no problem, that he would adjust the band’s performance around our filming, which got us excited. The resulting piece places viewers in the perfect vantage point to experience a band that delivers a powerful mix of hardcore Korean punk rock and surrealistic comedy. Armed with our sturdy Jump Odyssey camera rig in the midst of the mosh pit, we were able to honor the band and their fans with the kind of high energy immersive spectacle only VR can deliver.
