STORYLINE:
Around 80 worshippers bathed in ice water on Sunday at a shrine in Tokyo to pray for good health.
Men only wore traditional loincloths while women donned white robes as they took the plunge during the traditional New Year festival, also known as “Kanchu Misogi,” at Teppozu Inari shrine.
This year marked the 70th anniversary of the bathing festival.
Participants performed warm-up rituals, which involve rowing movements known as ‘torifune,' before taking a dip into the cold water.
It was veteran bather Shinji Ooi's 21st time.
“I pray for my family's health and wellbeing, including of my own, and for the safety of the community when I enter the water,” he said.
