Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead is home to animals of all kinds, shapes and sizes. One of the more elusive inhabitants is the black-tailed prairie dog. Named for their distinctive 'bark,' the prairie dog is related to the squirrel. They average around 15 inches in length, are 2 - 3 pounds and are very social amongst other prairie dogs. Prairie dog family groups, which can contain up to 26 individuals, share food, groom each other, and even greet one another with nose-to-nose nuzzles.
Their burrows are usually U-shaped with chambers connected by tunnels, and can go 7 to 15 feet deep. Multiple entrances allow for an escape route in the event a predator gets into the burrow. The nesting chamber is near the bottom of the burrow and has dry, grass bedding. There are listening chambers located near the entrance of the burrow, which allow prairie dogs to listen for potential predators before leaving the safety of the burrow.
Enjoy this prairie dog's-eye view of these cute little critters! If you're very patient (or like to scroll to the "good stuff") you will start to spot our furry friends as they pop up for breakfast. Enjoy the show!
