Bessarabyanke girl from Bessarabia
A famous Yiddish tune and circus music.
In 1892 my great-great-grandfather was with his vaudeville boat in Groningen. His eldest son, Jacob, 12 years old, left the boat and said that he was going to play in a circus. He walked with the trumpet in his bag on the road to Germany. At the border he arrived in a small Dutch village where a German circus was giving performances. They needed a trumpet player and Jacob played for 15 years in Germany and Holland. In 1912 he founded a 9 persons streetorchestra in the city of Leeuwarden. (My native town). The Maire gave his consent and his name to the band. De Patijntjes. They played 6 days a week and were very popular among the Jewish people of the town. The Germans forced them to stop in 1942.
I discovered in 1983 a disc of the Klezmorim (USA) and a piece called Bessarabyanke was my favourite song. I arranged it for my folkband. With Di Gojim we made piece widely known in the world of brass bands. There is a great chance that Jacob knew and played some of the melodies in the Bessarabyanke. To honour Jacob I play all the instruments except for the piano, played by my son Ruben.
