The song is a reality check on Rabindranath Thakur's famous song, 'krishnakali aami taarei boli' where Salil talks about the poverty in the villages of Bengal & how the happy young village-lady has been reduced to begging for food & clothing in the streets of the city.
This was also a sequel to the 'ballad' style of song - 'gnaayer bodhu' by Hemanta Mukherjee in 1949 (covering both sides of a 78 rpm disc)
Hemanta's song was a raging hit but the ending was pessimistic. Salil wanted to make amends with this song which ends on a note of hope.
Suchitra Mitra, the Rabindra Sangeet exponent, sang this as one of her rare forays outside the domain of Tagore's songs.
