After the fall of the Japanese Empire, Korea became independent; at that time, the Cold War was just beginning, so the question arose as to who would get the Korean peninsula. A treaty was signed between the USSR and the USA, according to which the North would go to the Communists and the South would be under the influence of the USA. However, in 1950 the government of North Korea started the war, for a month they occupied the main part of the south, the southerners strengthened in Busan, from where the help of allies came soon. In 1951, the Korean Republican Army knocked out the North Koreans from their territories, and began an offensive on the northern part, driving the Communists to the border of China and the USSR. However, with the help of Soviet and Chinese support, the North Koreans beat back the counterattack of the South Koreans and launched an offensive. In 1953, Korean troops stopped at the present-day border of the countries. A cease-fire was called and peace was signed. The two countries began to develop along opposite paths. The North adopted the ideology of Marxism-Leninism and the South became capitalist.
