The odd number of inverters in the circuit forms a closed loop with positive feedback and this is known as a ring oscillator. The oscillation frequency is calculated using following equation
Assuming that all inverters are identical and n is the number of inverters in the ring oscillator.
The Delay is calculated using
tphl+tplh= 0.7(Rn+Rp)(Cload)
We will design the 11 stage ring oscillator and estimate the oscillation frequency using the LTspice tool.
Cload= 5/2(1.25+0.625)fF= 4.7fF
tpHL + tpLH = 0.7.(3.4k+3.4k)(4.7fF)= 22ps
For an 11 stage ring oscillator, we get oscillation frequency of
fosc= 1/11(.22ps)= 4.1 Ghz
