The Atlantic needlefish is one of two members of Belonidae (Needlefishes) in the Hudson River Estuary in Newyork. The other is the houndfish (Tylosurus crocodilus). The associated Latin & common names, “needle” & “crocodile” are both suggestive and descriptive The Atlantic needlefish are found on coastal & inshore waters from New England to South America so that explains why they are common in the Haulover Inlet today.
The Atlantic needlefish are primarily sight-feeders & they can grow up to nearly two-feet in length, with more than 20% of their adult length taken up by slender tooth-studded jaws. They will frequently leap out of the water and swap ends in pursuit of prey.
It is endemic to coastal and inshore waters of the western Atlantic Ocean. Its primary native range extends from Maine to Brazil. Since it is an euryhaline species, it is frequently found in estuaries, bays, and has been known to travel far upstream into freshwater rivers, such as the Hudson River in New York & several river systems in Alabama. Besides migrating on its own, it has been introduced & established populations in parts of the Tennessee River drainage in Alabama & Tennessee. Back in Brazil, the Strongylura marina is found in coastal waters, estuaries and also travels upstream into freshwater rivers along the entire coast of Brazil, extending as far south as Rio de Janeiro state. The needlefish is common in coastal water, bays and estuaries across the western Atlantic. They are capable of ascending far upstream into rivers& are known to venture into freshwater for periods. They prefer shallow waters near the shoreline and they are often found near marshes, beaches & bay grass beds. As you can see from the video, they have a very elongated rounded body with extremely long, needle-like jaws filled with sharp teeth. They typically gorw to about 2 feet in length. They can jump out of the water at speeds close to 50km/hr. As mentioned previously the Atlantic needlefish is a predator. Its diet shifts as it matures. Juvineiles eat small crustaceans such as shrimp, mysids, and amphipods. The very young juveniles consume plankton. As adults, they consume small fish such as silversides, killifishes, anchovies, and herring. They also eat fish hiding in seagrass or seaweed. They continue to eat shrimp and cephalopods. The Atlantic needlefish are vulnerable to aerial predators such as large fish, marine mammals, birds and humans.


Haulover Inlet is a critical point of transit for boaters & is heavily trafficked. It is the only inlet available between Government Cut & Port Everglades. It was created to help boaters avoid having to travel down to Government Cut to access ocean waters. There are several factors that make Haulover Inlet dangerous to navigate. These are the factors that make the inlet dangerous: 1. unpredictable sandbars 2. strong tide currents 3. constant shoaling 4. rock walls 5. narrow channel 6. powerful onshore winds A boater that is unfamiliar with the inlet could easily be forced up onto the rocks due to the strong outgoing tide. Boaters should not underestimate the inlet & should ensure that they have the proper boat to safely navigate the channel. Ways to Prevent Accidents at Haulover Inlet: 1. learn from an experienced captain 2. travel during the day 3. never boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol 4. travel at safe speeds 5. appoint a proper lookout 6. wear a life jacket 7. look for calm waters 8. pay attention to wind speeds and weather conditions.
