Our story begins with a... very condensed recap of the events that take place in the sequel/prequel as Maxim, Selan, Guy, and Artea are thrust into the final battles against the Sinistrals on Doom Island. And, in all honesty, you have to actually try to lose these battles, but we get a nice taste of the differences in the battle system and get to enjoy some very top-tier tunes right away.
Of course we do know how it ends... but one story's ending is another's beginning.
