What did Brian Robertson bring to Motörhead ……
That is something that was oft heard muttered in dark corners of bars waiting on the Kilmister, Dee, Campbell line up to hit the stage.
What he brought was world class guitar and the ability to write the music for what can be classed as a world class album in guitar terms (the other two on the LP are not bad either). We all know the narrative Lemmy pushed about Robbo and to be fair I do not blame him. He had a band to resurrect when Phil quit after Robbo was sacked.
Let’s get the elephant out of the room. Sacking Eddie was a huge mistake. He was THE guitarist for Motörhead. He played within the perimeters set by Lemmy’s bass and he did it oh so well. Eddie wrote the riffs and the riffs were good.
Brian is not stupid. I have shared a few drinks with the man in the Horseshoe Bar in Glasgow. He likes a drink yes. Don’t we all, Lemmy included. He knew he had to change the dynamic of the band or he would be a very poor replacement for Eddie. Riffs were out and songs were in.
Brian was thrown into the wreckage of the US Tour with minimal rehearsal. Lemmy being too busy with bars to rehearse. Brian got one and a half rehearsals before his first show by road crew accounts.
Back in London he was abandoned in the studio to flesh out ideas and music for Another Perfect Day. Phil and Lemmy would turn up after the clubs had shut. Senior members of the Motörhead crew were not happy in the slightest.
That APD was such a great and innovative record is down to Brian (and due respect to Tony Platt who Brian brought in to produce). It is light years from the tired production and sluggish playing of Iron Fist.
I do agree with Eddie that the record was not finished and he was not able to keep Lemmy out the pubs wasting the limited time available. It is half of a very good album if it had been properly finished.
The two tours reflected this sentiment. If we consider the Glasgow Apollo shows of 82 & 83 there is only one winner.
Thank you for APD Brian and the Glasgow Apollo show. I enjoyed it and it looked like your Mum & Dad did too!
Thank you to the whole band for a drink afterward and autographs. If I could attend any gig again it would probably be Motörhead Glasgow Apollo 18th June 1983.
