Chloride ion concentration is determined by argentometric titration using silver nitrate solution as the titrant and potassium chromate as an indicator, a method known as the Mohr method. As silver nitrate is added, silver chloride precipitates; when all chloride is precipitated, excess silver ions react with the chromate indicator to form a red-brown silver chromate precipitate, signaling the endpoint. The volume of silver nitrate used is then correlated to the chloride concentration.
