Durand Bernarr won his first Grammy at the 2026 Grammy Awards and the moment instantly became one of the night’s most joyful, unforgettable highlights... but this? This is the cherry on top!!
The Cleveland-born R&B singer took home Best Progressive R&B Album for BLOOM at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 1, marking a career-defining win after more than two decades in music. And Bernarr didn’t walk to the stage... he RAN!
As his name was announced, Durand Bernarr sprinted down the aisle with pure, unfiltered excitement, delivering what many fans instantly dubbed the best moment of the night. The dramatic run (equal parts theatrical, stylish, and deeply authentic) quickly spread across social media, transforming into a viral meme celebrated as a burst of Black queer joy at a time when many say joy feels especially necessary.
Bernarr entered the night with three nominations, including Best R&B Song for “Overqualified” and Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Here We Are,” but BLOOM ultimately earned him his first Grammy win. Though he’s no stranger to the Recording Academy, the victory marked his long-awaited breakthrough.
Taking the stage at the Crypto.com Arena, Bernarr delivered a powerful and deeply personal acceptance speech. “Happy Black History Month for the rest of my life,” he said, before urging the audience to lead with grace, kindness, and community. As he spoke, his parents joined him onstage—an emotional moment that underscored the foundation behind his journey.
Addressing independent artists and queer creatives directly, Bernarr added, “To every Butch Queen who was made to feel like you were too much—I am the proof that you needed and the sign that you have been waiting for. Be yourself.” He closed by thanking himself for the perseverance it took to reach this moment, citing more than 20 years of dedication to his craft.
Released on Feb. 18, 2025 via Create Music Group, BLOOM is a 15-track project that showcases Bernarr in full creative command. The album includes the self-affirming anthem “Overqualified” and collaborations with T-Pain and R&B duo GAWD.
Describing the project, Bernarr has said BLOOM represents growth, self-acceptance, and emotional honesty—music shaped by love beyond romance and by spaces that allow people to fully thrive. He’s cited influences ranging from Phyllis Hyman and Luther Vandross to Maxwell, Chanté Moore, and Missy Elliott.
The album’s impact has been widely recognized. BLOOM was ranked No. 1 on Rated R&B’s 25 Best R&B Albums of 2025 list, cementing Bernarr’s place as one of the genre’s most distinctive and fearless voices.
Between the sprint to the stage, the emotional speech, and the historic win, Durand Bernarr didn’t just accept a Grammy—he delivered a moment of celebration, representation, and joy that many say they won’t forget anytime soon.
