Deep in the back of the MX5 engine lurks a little-known horror commonly known as the "Cursed Water Plug". It blocks off a feed from the coolant system which was not used in this application of the engine, but if it fails, all your coolant will leak out of the engine, causing it to overheat. I decided to replace mine just in case, and it turned out to be quite a horror of a job...
