On September 16, 2025, Proyecto Faro and North Star Fund hosted a funder briefing on why investing in immigrant justice and intersectional movement building in Rockland County, NY is so critical at this moment.
Background: Proyecto Faro was founded in 2017 by and for immigrants in Rockland County who felt vulnerable due to their immigration status, in consultation with key faith and community leaders. At the time, there were few organizing or leadership development efforts in a county with a rapidly growing immigrant population. Since then, we’ve built a grassroots, mutual aid organization focused on building power in immigrant communities. Today, Proyecto Faro is a key player in a strong network of Rockland-based organizations advancing immigrant, racial, educational and economic justice and serving and building the capacity of our immigrant communities.
The Challenge: Despite this momentum, Rockland County, an extremely diverse and populous county just outside NYC, is almost entirely overlooked by regional and national funders. Our key breakthroughs were supported by multi-year grants from the North Star Fund, New York Immigration Coalition, and the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance fund. At a moment when attacks on immigrant, BIPOC, and poor communities are escalating, those grants are winding down. In order to sustain and grow this urgent work and build formal coalitions with our partners who also struggle to find multi-year funding, we urgently need new funding avenues and partners.
The funder briefing highlighted how Proyecto Faro and our partners are transforming Rockland’s immigrant and social justice landscape with limited resources. Investing in our work now will expand our reach, deepen our impact within and beyond Rockland, and contribute to and strengthen New York and national community base-building movements.
We encourage funders and capacity/coalition builders focused on investing in immigrant justice and intersectional movement-building across race, gender and economic justice to watch this video and be in touch.
