BattlBox set out on a mission to help veterans one at a time, through a charity they call the Just One Project.
Instead of donating money to a long list of charities, most of which no one knows where 100% of the donation goes, they decided to do things a little different.
With profits from their Mission 29 BATTLBOX shipment and some of their own money, they wanted to make a strong, significant, life-changing impact in one Veteran's life.
The painstaking process took months to filter through.
Hundreds of emails were sent from people who knew a deserving veteran, who was struggling.
Some financially
Some emotionally
Others injured…..
But when one Veteran's story was read, it really grabbed the attention of the guys at BattlBox.
Sgt. Christopher Cymek at first glance seems like a typical soldier. Three combat tours with three children born during each deployment.
A happy wife, home, close-knit family and a devout man of God....
Things seemed like they were going well.
During one of his deployments, he got a call that his Grandfather had passed away. 4 days later, his mother also died suddenly.
In 2015, Sgt. Cymek and family found out that a family friend was molesting his nieces.
The man was arrested and released on bond, pending a court trial. In an effort to eliminate witnesses, the man broke into Sgt. Cymek's sisters apartment. Sgt. Cymek’s sister Lisa and two of her three daughters, Hailey and Paige were home. The man full of rage brutally stabbed the them all. Lisa and Hailey died tragically at the scene.
Miraculously, 15 year old Paige having been stabbed 12 times, survived. Paige is special needs and diagnosed with cerebral palsy. This soft-spoken young lady in a dying declaration (she was not expected to survive) was able to identify her attacker. It was her brave testimony and the testimony of others that led to a unanimous vote by all 12 jurors. The suspect received the death penalty on June 16, 2017.
Without question Sgt. Cymek took in his two surviving nieces. He knew his loving sister Lisa would have done the same for him.
In the midst of the murder trial SGT. Cymek's father suffered a heart attack, his father-in-law had to have back surgery, and his mother-in-law is fighting Stage 4 cancer. Both of his in-laws also now live in the Cymek residence. The small home in Maryland that houses a family of nine was in need of several repairs.
Repairs that Chris could not manage financially.
So, the guys from BattlBox flew out to Maryland to surprise SGT. Cymek with a little gift. On October 17th, 2017 they secretly arrived at his doorstep with some great news. Sgt. Cymek was unanimously voted to win the earnings from the Just One Project. Funds from the Just One Project were dispersed to replace all the windows in the home. A brand new fully installed Heating and Air Conditioning system for the home was paid in full also. Additionally several gift cards for food, clothes, and other home repairs were provided.
The look on his face was priceless and the story he told was emotional. This man had laid his life on the line for our freedom, and felt like he repeatedly was getting knocked down. He couldn't seem to get ahead and was just barely providing for his family that he loves so dearly. With a little help, BattlBox was able to help make his home more energy efficient, and provide some much needed extra funds for the kids.
The group parted ways as new friends and we hope the Cymek family can have some sense of relief from the painful past and the tough road still ahead.
Things are looking up for the Cymek family, however more assistance can only do more. Please take a moment and make a donation. https://www.gofundme.com/sgtcymek
