On April 26, 1972, the Yankees beat the Oakland A’s 4–2 at Yankee Stadium. Fritz Peterson pitched into the seventh, backed by a big three-run homer from Gene Michael off Denny McLain, who was trying to reboot his career in Oakland. The Yankees got early offense and leaned on their bullpen late to close it out.

Oakland chipped away with RBI hits from Larry Brown and George Hendrick, but couldn’t recover. Manager Dick Williams was ejected mid-game as frustrations mounted. The A’s would bounce back that season, eventually winning the World Series.
