The Great Blizzard of 1978 has gone down in history as one of the most catastrophic winter storms ever to strike Britain. The immense storm swept across the regions of the American Midwest at the turn of January and February 1978. This unprecedented “super-cyclone” dumped between 69 and well over 100 centimetres of snow, accompanied by gale-force winds reaching 111 km/h. The elements completely paralysed infrastructure, claimed around a hundred lives, and caused colossal material damage running into billions of dollars.
Imagine waking in the morning to find your home wrapped in deathly silence and absolute darkness. You try to open the front door, but it will not budge an inch. You go to the upstairs window, draw back the curtain… and are confronted by a solid wall of compacted snow.
Your house has not merely been covered. It has been buried alive. The only route to safety is a narrow passage up through the chimney onto the roof. This is not the plot of a Hollywood horror film. It was the reality of the Scottish Highlands in January 1978.
