I made this video specifically to answer this question from one of our channel viewers. It's a good question, so I thought I'd make a video to answer it "Whenever I change the kick drum to a quarter note, it changes the high hat to a quarter note along with it. When I change the high hat to a 16th note, it changes the kick drum. How do I fix this?"
The answer is that the length of your kick drum or snare etc does not really matter. Now.... stay with me here. Can you hold a bass drum beat for a half note - for 2 beats duration? No... you can't. In real life if you play the kick drum or the snare, the actual length of the note is probably even less than a 1/16 note. BUT... what is more important is where does that note occur - if you have a top line of say hi-hat 1/8 notes, what matters is where it occurs in the bar - you could only actually make your kick drum appear as a1/4 note if your'e writing it manually on manuscript paper. But at the end of the day, a drummer reading your chart doesn't really care if the bass drum is just an 1/8 note joined to the hi-hat above or shown as a separate 1/4 note with the stem down - he's going to play that note exactly the same way. What is important is WHEN the kick drum note occurs in relation to the rest of the beat.
