Описание: This video contains excerpts of my much-longer interview of musician, author, and historian Jerry Atkins in 2004. Jerry Atkins, a native Texarkanian, was among the most important researchers of Scott Joplin. Jerry's insights about Scott Joplin remain valid today. In this interview, Jerry discusses what I call the "politics of remembrance." Jerry discusses the fact that he was adamant that the phrase "American Composer" (rather than "King of Ragtime") be used as the descriptor on the mural of Scott Joplin that Jerry helped create in Texarkana. Jerry's insistence that "American Composer" be used on the mural is consistent with ASCAP's choice to use "American Composer" on the gravestone that was placed for Scott Joplin in October of 1975. Unfortunately, after Jerry's death, the caption on Texarkana's Scott Joplin mural was replaced with "Father of Ragtime," a phrase that causes many uninformed people to draw the erroneous conclusion that Joplin either invented Ragtime or did something that lead to the creation of Ragtime. Since Joplin is obviously not the "Father of Ragtime," it is my sincere hope that the caption on the mural will be changed to a phrase that is not misleading.
