Performers, staff and audience members who saw, or worked with, Bruce Forsyth at The Golden Garter remember Britain’s #1 Showman - as they tell what it was like backstage and front of house 50 years ago in Manchester - when Forsyth opened Manchester's Show Bar Theatre Restaurant (sibling to London's Talk Of The Town) on 7th. October 1968.
Seen in this film, surviving member of 'Britain's answer to Simon & Garfunkel', DANNY CLARKE recalls "I had the pleasure of being main support to Sir Bruce Forsyth on the opening week of the Golden Garter Cabaret Club in Wythenshawe. I was part of the TV folksy duo The Foggy Dew-O and remember a concert-style audience who listened and respected the performers. As an acoustic duo - playing live into 4 microphones with songs like Where Have All The Flowers Gone, English Country Garden & Whistling Gypsy plus playing Banjo and Mandolin instrumentals - we needed to be listened to, not talked over, as happened in many clubs at that time. Brucie was polite to us (we were in the adjacent dressing room), greeting us with an “Evening boys", as he walked past us each night of the 6-day engagement. "Evening Bruce", we’d reply. Later, after his show (again hoping to engage in conversation, as we placed ourselves in the corridor, being too shy to knock on his dressing room door) it was just the 2 words “Night Boys” - with our “Night Bruce" reply – so, sadly, we only had limited engagement with him. His show was masterful (we stayed over, every night, to watch) and we were surprised at how talented in song, dance, comedy and the pianoforte he was. With his piano player and stooge, Colin Keyes, the full house audience loved him. A Great week. A Great Place. A Great Performer”
