All delegates to the convention signed up to participate in one three choral ensemble workshops led by distinguished internationally acclaimed choirmasters.
Workshop No 3 was the Traditional Male Voice Synagogue Choir, led by Composer and choirmaster Maestro Charles Heller. For men only, this choir sang at the Shabbat synagogue services and presented what they had been working on to the plenary session Motzei Shabbat. Shown here is one of two pieces presented on that Motzei Shabbat.
Soloist is Cantor Tibor Kovari of Toronto.
About the choirmaster:
Charles Heller studied natural sciences at Cambridge University and has a BEd in Music Education from the University of Toronto.
He has worked in synagogue music as choir director and music arranger for over 50 years, beginning as a chorister aged eight, working in synagogue services, concerts and recordings with leading cantors including Naftali Herstik, Louis Danto and Aaron Bensoussan, and in concerts with Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, David Koussevitsky and Marvin Hamlisch.
He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Synagogue Music (Cantors Assembly of America) and is the author of the award-winning What to Listen For in Jewish Music and Shul Going: 2500 Years of Impressions and Reflections on Visits to the Synagogue. www.charlesheller.ca
