On February 8th, I would kick my year off at the Reading & Northern. For the first time since it's restoration, The Reading 2102 would operate a Winter Iron Horse Ramble, from Reading to Jim Thorpe, & Return to Port Clinton. Diesels would then take the Train back to Reading. Originally I had plans to go south that weekend, but decided to change plans when I saw this excursion. While many were hoping for snow that day, the most we got was Ice on the ground to frame with the Train. So far this is my favorite chase with the 2102. The engine put on a fantastic show in the Winter Weather. Trackside, I went for shots I had yet to get of the 2102 on it's excursion, as it battles the grades both ways on the trek. From Frozen ponds & lakes, to S curves, to mountainous grades where 2102 earns the title of loudest operational steam locomotive, to locations that only work when it is overcast. I hope you all enjoy my coverage of 2102's first Winter Iron Horse Ramble.

The #2102 was originally built as a Reading I-10sa Consolidation Type Steam Locomotive in the 1920s. In the 40s when the Reading Railroad needed a more powerful steam locomotive during the War, the locomotive was rebuild by the Reading Shops into the 4-8-4 T1 4-8-4 Type Steam Locomotive to haul the heavier trains. In the 1960s the engine operated on the Famous Reading Ramble Excursions. Afterwards, she would be sold and operated across the county. In the 1980s Andy Mueller purchased the 2102 and began operating it on his Tourist Railroad, and while she went down in 1991, she grandly returned in 2022! For the past 3 years, it has been operating Fall Foliage, and Iron Horse Rambles excursions. I look forward to chasing more of this engine this year.
It was a great way to kick off the year. Sadly, I have nothing now until April, which I look forward to attending the first Steam In The Valley with 765 a few years. I am hoping this year to get more of the #2102 as well as hoping to see #1225 #4014 #261 #4960 #630 #4501 and others. Stay tuned! I am hoping to get out further west this year. will be a compilation coming up in March. As always stay tuned! If you want to stay up to date with my adventures, links provided below.
