How To Teach Your Dog or Puppy Their Name

Use your dog’s name to get their attention before you ask them to do something (such as Sit or Come) so they know you are speaking to them.
If your dog is already paying attention you don’t need to say their name.

If your dog is not looking at you, and you say his name, he will learn to respond by turning his head around towards you to see what you want - this turning of the head is what we want to see happen.
Take a couple of steps forwards with your dog, say your dog's name in a clear voice, and as your dog turns towards you, take 2-3 steps backwards holding a piece of food in your hand down near your knee/shin, so that your dog comes towards you to get the treat. If necessary, you can gently use the lead to help your dog turn towards you as you step backwards, or make a Kissy noise, or say "Pup, Pup, Pup". Whenever you say your dog’s name, immediately follow it with something positive - a treat, a cheerful voice, a pat, a smile, or toss a toy.

Don’t use your dog’s name to reprimand them because they will then think their name is a negative word. If your dog doesn’t respond to their name, don’t repeat the name over and over again or you will teach your dog that their name has no significance.

If your dog doesn’t pay attention to their name, you need to practice it A LOT in a less distracting environment, and have a more interesting reward.
