The party believed in strictly interpreting the Constitution and limiting the federal government's power.

Supporters favored states' rights and believed that the states should have more power than the federal government.

Followers believed in an agrarian society and included farmers and rural areas.

The party had an anti-British and pro-French Revolution sentiment.

Democratic-Republicans favored a decentralized banking system and opposed a national bank.

The organization wanted a strong military, but only for defensive purposes, and pursued the expansion of the United States.

The party eventually split following the election of 1824.
