NYCT M5 LIMITED Bus Ride: 2022 New Flyer XDE40 9430 from Midtown to Washington Heights

Footage of 2022 New Flyer XDE40 9427 operating on the M5 LIMITED from 6th Avenue & West 42nd Street in East Village, to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station (West 178th Street & Broadway) in Washington Heights. I almost missed this bus, because it did not head down to 31st Street and I had to take the subway up one stop to catch this bus. Had this been a full trip, this video would have started from 6th Avenue & West 31st Street, just south of Herald Square.

The M5 bus travels up 6th Avenue in Midtown until Central Park South, and then goes to Columbus Circle. It then takes Broadway up to 72nd Street, and heads west to Riverside Drive. After reaching and turning onto Riverside Drive, it heads up until 135th Street, where it travels back to Broadway. At 135th Street & Broadway, the bus once again turns onto Broadway, where it stays on until 178th Street (George Washington Bridge Bus Station). The bus makes a turn onto 178th Street, and terminates.

Buses are being temporarily swapped between Michael J Quill Depot and Manhattanville Depot. This means some Nova Bus LFS HEVs are at Quill, and some New Flyer XDE40s are at Manhattanville. This is to train operators at both depots in the case that they have to rely on each others' fleets during future events (such as snow-related loans). Assignments and their conditions are subject to change, however in the meantime, XDE40s now also appear on routes such as the M2, M3, M4, M11, M96, M98, M106, and M116.

The 2022 New Flyer XDE40s, much like the 2021 units, have back doors which slide outward instead of simply opening outward. Sliding back door action can be seen at various points throughout the video, which is easier than having to physically push doors out on some older buses. The operator also has a little TV towards the front which shows the movement by the back door, making it easier to know when to close the doors. This makes it easier for riders to get off, and can help improve dwell times.
