An animated story for children about one of Britain’s first Black professional footballers — and a brave soldier in the First World War.
Told in Walter’s own words, this inspiring short film is part of the official Black History Month 2025 schools pack, themed “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.”
Walter Tull was born in 1888 in Folkestone, Kent. After losing both parents, he was raised in a children’s home in London, where he discovered a passion for football.
He went on to play for Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town, becoming only the second Black player in the top division.
When war broke out, Walter joined the British Army and made history again — becoming one of the first Black officers to lead white British troops into battle.
He fought with courage and compassion, but tragically lost his life in 1918 at the age of just 29.
This video honours Walter’s story of resilience, pride, and leadership — on the field, and on the battlefield.
