✨Real Puerto Rican Sazón (Just Like our Abuela’s)✨
Skip the artificial dyes, MSG, and excess sodium. This is the OG sazon oil (achiote oil) we grew up with. Rich color, real flavor
I didn’t measure lol, but here’s my best estimate ⤵️
You’ll Need:
• 1–2 cups olive oil
• A big handful of achiote/annatto seeds
• 4–5 garlic cloves (smashed)
• ¼ of an onion (chunked)
• A few culantro leaves (or cilantro if you gotta substitute)
• Pinch cumin
• Pinch oregano (or fresh)
• 1 bay leaf
How To:
1. Add everything to a small pot.
2. Heat gently until it just starts to simmer, don’t let the seeds burn.
3. Lower heat and let it infuse for about 5 minutes.
4. Remove from heat and strain (optional).
5. Pour into a glass jar or bottle.
Tip: The seeds burn fast, so keep your heat low. burnt achiote = bitter flavor 😭
How to Use:
Just a drizzle gives your food that authentic Puerto Rican flavor + deep golden color arroz con gandules, meats, sofrito dishes, everything!
Storage:
Store in a glass jar in a cool spot. 2–3 weeks on the counter or 1–2 months in the fridge is a safe range.
