Thermal devices have come a long way in the last 20 years in terms of, cost, size, features and applications. A number of professional deer managers in England are now using clip-on thermals in the humane culling of deer, to maximise the legal limits of daylight shooting rather than going down straight to a night licence application route. Around the middle of August, Chris Rogers heads down to the Euston Estate Rifle Range to set up his Swarovski TX Encounter, before heading out on a stalk around the edge of the big wood for a red spiker. As a one off, Chris is using the new estate rifle, a Sauer 505 in .308, but thanks to another heat wave the deer don’t want to move early. Chris explains all you need to consider when using thermal clip-ons and its clear they offer great advantages to those who are under pressure to cull high numbers.
