In this talk we explore one of the fundamental tools in fractal geometry—fractal dimension. We see how a notion of fractal dimension can be derived from observations about how scaling affects the “size” of a set. This leads us to the definition of the box-counting dimension. Additionally, we discuss some of the ideas from noncommutative fractal geometry and the use of fractal tools to analyze data.
