In early 1938, Adolf Hitler sought tighter personal control over Germany’s armed forces. The opportunity came through a scandal involving Germany’s Minister of War, Werner von Blomberg.
Shortly after Blomberg married his new wife, German authorities discovered that she had a criminal record connected to prostitution and pornography. Leading Nazi officials used this information to pressure Blomberg, arguing that his position had become politically untenable.
Blomberg was forced to resign, not driven to suicide. Contrary to some later stories, there is no solid historical evidence that Germany’s naval commander, Erich Raeder, or other officials sent officers to pressure Blomberg into taking his own life. Instead, the scandal was leveraged politically to remove him from office.
Blomberg’s fall, combined with the simultaneous removal of Army commander Werner von Fritsch in a related controversy, allowed Hitler to abolish the independent War Ministry and assume direct control of Germany’s military, consolidating his personal power just before World War II.
