Описание: This video covers pp. 94-98 in the Discipline Era Transcriptions book. Fripp’s parts are panned right and Belew’s are panned left. In the original studio recording, this section starts at 2:17. Steve Vai bemoaned the “relentless” physical demands of playing Fripp’s parts, and this is a great example. Fripp’s hands (read: my/your hands) never get a break, and it explains why 1980s Crimson often started live concerts with this piece – to get it out of the way early! If you are learning this piece, my advice is to practice for short time periods to avoid straining your fretting hand. Alternate picking works best for these patterns.

Analysis: In the first section of this video (Section D in the book), both guitars play in A minor in 5/8. The same figures are then transposed up to C minor, and this section is twice the length of the previous section (8x total). The next section (Section C1) starts with both guitars playing three groupings of five 16th notes in C minor (the “Discipline” motive, 15/16 meter). Belew plays this figure 16 times total. Fripp matches Adrian for the first bar, but then he drops a note and plays groupings of 14/16 a total of ten times, so he progressively falls a beat behind with each measure. After ten times through, Fripp plays a “filler” bar of 10/16 (i.e., 2 groupings of 5 instead of 3) in order to join Belew on the downbeat of the next bar where they sync up note-for-note for a final five times through the “Discipline motive” patterns that started this section.

The math of this section is - Belew: 16 times in 15/16 = 240 beats. Fripp: 10 times in 14/16 = 140 + 6 times in 15/16 (90), so 140 + 90 = 230. Add the “filler” bar of 10/16 for a total of 240 beats.

In the last section heard here (Section E on p. 97), the “Discipline motive” is transformed into a 12/16 grouping (5+3+4) in C# minor, which Belew plays consistently 27 times (“it remains consistent” ) before it’s bumped up to the key of E minor (top of page 100 in the book, Section E1). Throughout Section E, Fripp again subtracts a beat from Adrian’s figure and plays in 11/16. He plays that figure 12 times, then plays 1 bar of 12/16 to match Belew before continuing the 11/16 pattern as before, repeating what he just played. When they sync up for a second time on the 12/16 bar, they match each other note for note 4 more times before moving on to Section E1 in E minor.

The math of this section is - Belew: 27 times in 12/16 = 324 beats. Fripp: 12 times in 11/16 = 132 (x2) = 264. Then add the 5 bars of matching 12/16 patterns (5x12 = 60). 60 + 264 = 324 beats. Good luck!
