On September 5, 2015, the Catholic Diocese of Arlington’s Peace and Justice Commission held "Race Relations: Educating for Diversity" at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. In light of recent events in the media from across the United States, and the recent statements on aspects of race and our Catholic Social Teaching, from our United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and many other arch/diocesan bishops, we gathered a Keynote speaker and panelists to address the topic of race relations and how we can educate others for diversity, based on our Catholic morals and values. Many came from across the Diocese and engaged in lively conversation.
Our day began with Mass and a homily on race relations by Bishop Paul S. Loverde in the Marymount Sacred Heart Chapel. Mass was followed by our Keynote speaker, Father Henry Sands, the Executive Director of the Black and Indian Mission Office, who was later joined by our panelists, Deacon Al Turner Jr., Retired Director, Office of Black Catholics, Archdiocese of Washington and Mrs. Maria Hamm, Director, Hispanic Family Life and Leadership Development, Archdiocese of Washington. Each of these speakers brought their own unique story of racism, prejudice or stereotype stories to the gathering which helped us grow in our ongoing relationships with others.
