A major new addition to Android recently, has been a feature that Google calls Theft Protection.
The idea is that, once enabled, your phone will quickly lock the screen if it senses it has been stolen by a thief.

Like, if someone were to grab it from your hand while you're using it in public.
It also has a remote lock feature built in. . .so you can lock the phone from a web browser. . .even if you lost. . .or misplaced it.

But Google just recently added a new toggle to Android's Theft Protection suite. . .
So let's dive right in to learn more about it.




Theft Protection Update
The new feature is called Failed Authentication Lock
and Google has had this feature enabled by default since it launched with Android 15.

But in a brand new change, you'll be able to find a toggle for it, by first launching into your Settings application.
I prefer to search for Theft Protection from the top here.
Although, you can manually find the menus if you'd like.

From here, you'll find the full suite of features offered by Android's Theft Protection rollout.

This is what Google just announced an update with.
In the blog post, we're told that this was added to Android as a way to increase the odds of your phone being locked if it has being used by someone who isn't yourself.

Meaning, when it was introduced with Android 15. . .you would notice the screen would lock if the phone detected incorrect login attempts happening

And this security feature could even be triggered from failed login attempts for regular apps as well. . .
Not just for your main account.

But Google received some reports from the community saying they thought this was going too far.
Because not everyone is able to enter their password correctly on the first try.

So, if you want to disable this feature. . .you now have the ability to do so from the Theft Protection page.

When disabled, you'll be able to incorrectly guess your password as many times as you want.
When this is enabled. . .Android will lock the screen if it notices you've guessed too many app passwords incorrectly.
