'Moya' was a pseudonym used by the British pianist, conductor and composer Harold Archdall Vicars (1876 - 1922?). Vicars was primarily a conductor of opera and musical comedy (eg, a production of 'Faust' in Liverpool in 1902), and conducted several Broadway productions in the 1910s (he died in New York). This 1914 song was once extremely popular, and sung by Mario Lanza. Its text was a translation of the French 'Chanson d'un coeur brisé' by Maurice Vaucaire. The transcriber of this 1955 piano version, Louis ('Lou') C Singer (1913-66), was a child prodigy pianist who later became an arranger for Duke Ellington in the 1930s and 1940s. He was also a percussionist, appearing on sessions in the 1950s with Peggy Lee, Harry Belafonte and others. In this and other commercial piano arrangements, aimed at a domestic market, Singer brings touches of the dance-band and musical theatre scoring of the period to much older songs - making fascinating 'new' period pieces.
