Park Rangers Lead Cleanup of Homeless Encampments to Restore Venice Handball Courts

Part of the city’s weekly maintenance initiative, the effort focused on tackling sanitation and safety concerns at the heavily trafficked beachfront.

During the operation, Los Angeles Park Rangers discovered an unoccupied tent inside one of the handball courts. Following protocol, they waited 15 minutes for the owner to return. When no one arrived, the cleanup crew proceeded to dismantle the tent and continued clearing the area.

The effort, led by Los Angeles Park Rangers with support from multiple city agencies, involved the removal of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste while enforcing Municipal Code 63.44, which prohibits camping in public parks. No citations were issued, as the operation maintained a compassionate approach to addressing the needs of the homeless community.

The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) was on-site to assist, providing food, water, and hygiene kits to individuals impacted by the cleanup. A representative from Councilwoman Traci Park’s office was also present, highlighting the city’s ongoing commitment to balancing public health and safety with efforts to support Venice Beach’s unhoused population.
