We hired a tiny rooftop camper in Japan to escape the crowds — and our quiet road trip quickly turned into a winter adventure. This is Day 1 of our Japan car camping series, where we leave Tokyo behind, explore a peaceful bamboo forest, visit a small red torii gate Inari shrine, and end the night driving through real falling snow on the way to Nagano.
This trip is Dustin’s first time ever in Japan, and instead of easing him in, we rented a Suzuki Jimny Sierra rooftop camper from Overland Japan and hit the road. Over four nights of car camping, we slow travel through rural Japan, focusing on calm, uncrowded places and scenic drives.
Our first stop is Chikurin Park, a quiet bamboo forest that felt worlds away from the busy tourist areas. From there, we head to Koizumi Inari Shrine, a small and peaceful torii gate shrine tucked into the countryside, where exploring by car makes the experience easy and relaxed.
As night falls, our drive toward Nagano takes an unexpected turn — snow begins falling fast. What starts as a calm road trip becomes Marie's first experience driving in real winter conditions, parking near a closed campground, and spending a freezing night in a tiny car… questioning our choices and loving every second of it.
🚐 Camper details:
We rented a Suzuki Jimny Sierra from Overland Japan (≈ ¥19,800 / ~$128 USD per day), equipped with a pop-up rooftop bed, mini fridge, gas stove, rice cooker, chairs, and full camping gear.
